Finland received only one medal from the World Championships in Planica. The finals weekend did not go as expected.
Finland won one medal at the World Championships in Planica.
The only one came from the men’s 4×10 kilometer relay in cross-country skiing, where Cross mat Hakola, Iivo Niskanen, Perttu Hyvärinen and Niko Anttola are celebrating World Cup silver.
The medal haul is three times smaller than in the previous World Championships. Two years ago in Oberstdorf, Finland won a medal in the women’s relay, the men’s pair relay and the combined normal distance competition.
– The men’s relay medal was positive. It describes the extent of the level, when four have to succeed. In the women’s relay, we were fourth and lost a couple of seconds to Sweden. It was all right, head coach of the Finnish national team Teemu Pasanen says.

Finland has missed out on one World Cup medal last time in Seefeld in 2019. Throughout history, a similar balance has now come from four World Cups.
In Planica, the expected top places in the men’s 50 and women’s 30 kilometers were missing.
– The personal trips did not go as planned. We didn’t have many athletes who were medal favorites. They didn’t quite succeed, Pasanen said.
– Iivo and Kerttu Niskanen were in good shape, but everything depends on the little things. If everything doesn’t work out on the same day, there won’t be a medal, he continued.
The medal pile at the World Championships was Norway, which won no less than 27 medals. Sweden and Germany grabbed 12 sticks.
Poland, the United States and the host country Slovenia won more medals than Finland.
