If Finland or Sweden apply to join NATO, they will be accepted the next day. These countries meet all the criteria, says former NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen.
He also noted that NATO’s doors are open to everyone, and the Russian authorities cannot dictate who can join the alliance and who can’t. Rasmussen claims that at the talks between Russia and NATO, which took place in Europe, Moscow demanded a veto on the further expansion of the military bloc.
As for the Russian invasion of Ukraine, this will not happen, the former secretary general said in an interview with the Finnish television company Yle.
Earlier, Finnish Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto said that the Republic does not conduct any accession negotiations with NATO. However, President Sauli Niiniste insists that Finland reserves the right to join the North Atlantic Alliance.
