Finance wants to guard against future quantum cyberattacks

Quantum computing, which offers infinitely more computing possibilities than classical computing, represents an asset in many fields. Quantum technology could improve the security of sensitive data exchanges against the risk of cyberattacks. An application that is of particular interest to the world of finance.

First commercial trial of a quantum security network

British operator BT and Japanese manufacturer Toshiba launched in early April the first commercial test of a quantum secure communication device. The two companies are working with the audit firm Ernst & Young (EY), which has connected two of its London offices with a quantum-safe network.

The objective is to allow EY clients to be put in touch across London, while preserving the security of their data exchanges. The director of quantum computing at AWS explained in an interview with Century Digital that quantum technology makes it possible to perform calculations that cannot be performed by a classical computer. The latter is based on a binary system that uses bits. A bit can be either 0 or 1. Quantum computing uses the qubit, which can be 0 and 1 simultaneously. This allows other, more advanced calculations to be made.

In this project, BT provides quantum-safe services that use private fiber networks. Toshiba provides the other core element of this device: Quantum Key Distribution technology. This is a method for encrypting exchanges between several interlocutors which makes it possible to detect attempts to intercept communications.

Applications in many fields

The United Kingdom has been making progress in the quantum technologies sector since the establishment of the National Quantum Technologies Program in 2013. This program represents an investment of 1 billion pounds sterling to develop the uses of quantum in the sectors of computing, communication or imagery.

France has also invested heavily in quantum computing through its “France 2030” plan. The applications desired by the government are multiple. They will take place in the field of scientific research and also in military defense with the launch of a computing platform which will “to improve the performance of detection of armaments and navigation”explained the Minister of the Armed Forces.
