Rebecca Langrehr is the name of the new German champion in modern pentathlon – which, however, was a four-way battle at the 2022 finals.
At the German championships with international participation, the riding discipline was missing after the discussions about the Olympic decision with Annika Schleu in Tokyo 2020. The field of participants in the modern pentathlon at the finals 2022 was therefore measured in fencing, swimming and the laser run of shooting and running.
In fencing and shooting, the German Anna Matthes had presented the best. Especially in fencing, the favorite Langrehr fell short of her expectations. Before the final laser run, however, the pentathletes had to be patient: Due to a storm warning in Berlin, the start was delayed by about an hour.
Langrehr started as the top favorite in Laserrun
After the first two disciplines, Anna Matthes started the laser run 19 seconds before the competition. Top favorite Rebecca Langrehr started 29 seconds behind her compatriot in seventh place. Four shooting bouts and 3,000 meters over five laps had to be completed. And these shooting bouts were Anna Matthes’ undoing – red dots for missed shots lit up again and again, so that she lost a lot of time and had to let Rebecca Langrehr go.
The top favorite for the German championship title was also not flawless on the shooting range, but came through much better. In the end, the day’s victory went to the Italian Andrea Frezza, but the German champion is Rebecca Langrehr, who came third but was the first German to cross the finish line. Esther Fernandez Donda won silver and Julie Walser secured bronze.
