Finally rain approaching, but watch out for slippery roads in places

After weeks without a drop of rain, the KNMI predicts local rain showers from tomorrow afternoon. This provides the necessary lighting, but also any smoothness.

From tomorrow afternoon, the chance of a rain or thunderstorm will increase from the southwest. Tomorrow evening it will be partly to heavily clouded, according to the KNMI. According to NH weatherman Jan Visser, there is a chance of a local rain shower in our province. That chance is small, but it is present, and then there is also a chance of local slipperiness.

Slimy layer

According to Weeronline, slipperiness can be caused by rain that mixes with dirt residues, forming a ‘slimy layer’ on the road surface. Those dirt residues consist of pieces of rubber, oil or other dust particles.

The most dangerous thing is the first light rain that falls on the road, the site reports. This has to do with the braking distance, which can then be longer than normal. As soon as it starts to rain harder, the slippery layer formed by the first rain quickly washes away. Especially in places where it has not rained before, slipperiness can still occur for the rest of the week.

Jan Visser is still cautious about the amount of rain that will fall in North Holland. “There is still a lot of uncertainty about that. If it breaks loose on Tuesday and Wednesday, it is still far from certain whether it will really be much.”
