A team of fifteen volunteers had already started working before the weekend, so that skating could take place today on the roller rink, says ice master Nico Kuipers. “On Friday we cleared the track of all the snow rubbish with two tractors and pushers.”

Since six o’clock this morning, there has been constant work to get the ice as thick as possible. Nico: “About every hour we made a round with a tractor and slurry tank to make ice.”

The ice eventually turned out to be firm enough, “We already agreed yesterday that we would go skating today,” says a girl, after she has downed a hot cup of chocolate milk. Her brother, still with a brown milk moustache, says how much he enjoys the ice rink: “A ten out of ten.”

Waking up rascals

It was also possible to skate on natural ice in other places in the province (see photos below). But that didn’t go well everywhere. Several people fell through the ice on the Weespersluiskade in Weesp. Around a quarter to four in the afternoon, the police recommended not to go on the ice there anymore.
