Cologne (dpa) – The footballers of VfL Wolfsburg go in the DFB Cup final on a record hunt.
With a win over outsiders Turbine Potsdam and the possible eighth title win in a row, coach Tommy Stroot’s team could equal the previous record of 1. FFC Frankfurt, which triumphed nine times on Saturday (4.45 p.m. / ARD and Sky). “Records are always something nice and something special. It would be a nice goal for the club,” said midfielder Svenja Huth.
However, the Wolfsburg women, who have won all cup finals since 2015, have been warned. After all, they had to go into overtime in three of the last four finals and even went to penalties twice. “I have a lot of memories of very, very close games, so we’re going to assume that again. We’ll have to invest a lot to win at the end,” said coach Stroot.
It is the first cup final for both him and his opponent Sofian Chahed. The two football teachers made no secret of their anticipation. “It’s a highlight of the season, a day for women’s football,” said Stroot. Chahed sees it similarly: “We can expect a great atmosphere. 16,000 tickets have already been sold. Hopefully there will be a few more spectators who will create a good atmosphere.”
Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier will also be part of the honoring delegation that will present the trophy to the winning team. DFB President Bernd Neuendorf has tested positive for Corona and can therefore not be there in Cologne.
