Final victory against the Netherlands: German hockey women celebrate EM gold in Hamburg

Status: 12/10/2022 5:07 p.m

The German hockey women became European champions for the 16th time at the European Indoor Championships in Hamburg. In the final against the Netherlands, the DHB selection prevailed 5:4 (1:2) in front of 3,550 spectators.

Huge cheers from the German hockey women. After a convincing performance at the home European Championship, the “Danas” lived up to their role as favorites and crowned themselves in an exciting final.

Ironically, with the 4: 2 (2: 2) success against the Netherlands, the DHB selection had previously made the final ticket clear in the preliminary round. And similar to the first meeting, the Dutch got off to a better start in the final. After a penalty corner, Lieke van Wijk gave the visitors the lead.

Altenburg awards seven meters

At the beginning of the second quarter, Pia Maertens took advantage of a mistake made by the Dutch and equalized. Five minutes before the break, the visitors took the lead again in front of 3,550 spectators through Pam Imhof. Lisa Altenburg had the opportunity to equalize with a seven-meter penalty 35 seconds before half-time, but shot wide of the goal on the right.

Maertens with the initial spark

Unfazed by this, the “Danas” started the second half. Maertens again equalized in a game that Germany controlled with a lot of ball possession. As a result, the fast game of both teams was repeatedly interrupted by petty referee decisions by the team from Great Britain.

Maertens on the third, compensation in return

She is the best player of the tournament and she crowned her performance with the third goal for the German team – Maertens gave the DHB women the first lead two minutes before the end of the third quarter. However, the Netherlands was able to equalize in direct return through Donja Zwinkels to 3:3. In a now hectic game, just a few minutes later, Lisa Altenburg shook the Hamburg sports hall with her goal and the renewed lead.

Crime in the final phase

Germany followed suit in the last part of the game. Altenburg scored the 5:3 – it was her 14th goal at this European Championship. At the back, goalkeeper Nathalie Kubalski fended off numerous attempts by the Dutch women with strong saves. 1:40 minutes before the end, however, she was unable to prevent Zwinkels from scoring 4:5.

Driven on by the crowd, the outnumbered German team fended off the last attempts at attack and were already happy about the European Championship title. But contrary to what everyone thought, the referees didn’t decide on the final whistle, but on a corner. But the “Danas” were able to fend off these too.

DHB men fear for the final

After the 6:7 (2:3) defeat against Austria, the German men need a big win in the last preliminary round match against the Czech Republic (6:15 p.m.). The Austrians have already been determined as the first finalist. The final will take place on Sunday at 2 p.m.
