Final spurt towards the European Championship: Who will qualify and how? Italy threatens playoffs

Overview of the constellations

The host is there, as are top nations like England and Spain. But qualifying for the European Championship for the 2024 tournament in Germany is not a sure-fire success for everyone. A few more decisions will be made in November, but not all of them yet. An overview of constellations and paths to Germany, where the next European champion will be sought from June 14th to July 14th next year.

Group A: Spain and Scotland (15 points each) are through. The Spaniards are in a better position to win the group, which would be important for the draw (December 2nd).

Group B: France (18) is there and is definitely the group winner. A win from the games against Ireland and in Gibraltar is enough for the Netherlands (12). Greece is level on points, but has one game less left and also has to play against France.

Group C: England finished first in the group with 16 points. Ukraine (13) and defending champion Italy (10) are fighting for the second ticket. The key game is the direct duel on November 20th in Leverkusen. The “Squadra Azzurra” is threatened with the Nations League playoffs.

Group D: Turkey (16) is there, followed by Wales and Croatia (10 each) in a long-distance duel. Only if Wales makes a mistake in Armenia or against Turkey can the third place in the Qatar World Cup still overtake them.

Group E: The surprising league leaders Albania (13) can only theoretically be pushed out of one of the first two places. Behind them, the Czech Republic (11) has the best cards. Even a home win against Moldova is enough. Poland has to fear the detour via the Nations League playoffs.

Group F: Belgium (17) and Austria (16) are certainly there. With a home win over Azerbaijan, Belgium can take first place. For the first time since 1996, Sweden will definitely not be taking part in the European Championships.

Group G: Hungary (14) needs a point from two games to be safe. Serbia (13) also has the best chance of a direct ticket compared to Montenegro (8).

Group H: Denmark and Slovenia (19 each) have the best prospects, but have not yet qualified. Kazakhstan (15) would stay in the race until the final matchday if they beat San Marino at home. Finland (12) has to make it through the Nations League playoffs.

Group I: For Israel (11), the 0-1 defeat in Kosovo on Sunday evening was a bitter setback. Now Romania (16) and Switzerland (15) have every chance. The three top teams all still compete against each other in direct duels.

Group J: Portugal are safely through after eight wins. Slovakia (16) can hardly be displaced by Luxembourg (11) and Iceland (10). Even one point from two games would be enough.

European Championship qualification: Nations League playoffs as a last detour – with Italy?

What other way is there? The detour is the playoffs, which will be held in March 2024. There are a total of three tickets for three Nations League groups and for 12 participants. Robert Lewandowski’s Poland is threatened with this path, possible opponents would then be World Cup semi-finalists Croatia or European champions Italy. In League B, the Norwegians around Erling Haaland have to hope for help. Norway can only make it to the playoffs if teams listed ahead of them buy a direct ticket. Specifically, Norway has to hope for Ukraine (against Italy) and Israel (in a duel with Romania).

How does winning the qualifying group help? Some. The five best group winners in terms of points make it into pot one alongside hosts Germany. According to the current status, these are Portugal, France, Belgium, England and Turkey. Spain can still overtake Belgium and Turkey on its own. The draw pots for the draw on December 2nd in Hamburg will be determined solely based on the performance in the qualification.
