Many voices in Schalkwijk
The turnout was particularly high in the parts of the city where paid parking would be introduced according to the plans. However, many Haarlem residents from neighborhoods that are not on that list also cast their votes, such as in Parkwijk and Schalkwijk. Residents of large parts of Haarlem-Noord also showed up en masse.
In the only polling station in Spaarndam, ‘only’ 136 completed ballots were counted. Of these, 119 were against the parking plan and 17 were in favor.
It’s time for advice
Now that the referendum clearly shows that an overwhelming majority of Haarlem residents speak out against the parking proposals that the city council previously adopted, it is the council’s turn again.
The Management Committee will discuss the results on Thursday, March 21. A week later, the full municipal council will make a decision on whether the note in question will be thrown in the trash or not. The council may decide to ignore the outcome of the advisory referendum, although that chance does not seem great.
