Fight for millions: Dortmund opens contract poker with Kobel

Goalkeeper Gregor Kobel has been one of the undisputed top performers at Borussia Dortmund for almost three years. The achievements of the Swiss have long made other clubs prick up their ears. For this reason, BVB wants to act now.

BVB does not yet have to worry about the departure of goalkeeper Gregor Kobel. The current working paper of the Swiss runs until the summer of 2026. However, since the 25-year-old has long since developed into one of the best keepers in the Bundesliga, some clubs are said to have already put out feelers for him.

For this reason, the BVB bosses now want to get down to business ahead of time and extend the contract with their number one ahead of time. This is reported by the “Blick”. However, the Swiss tabloid speculates that a contract extension with Kobel could also mean significant additional financial expenditure for the black and yellow.

Does BVB make Kobel the top earner?

In return for a new signature, Dortmund would have to promise the goalkeeper twelve to 13 million euros a year. That would be equivalent to a roughly 300 percent increase in his current salary, which according to consistent reports should be four million euros.

However, this financial risk could still pay off for BVB in the end, especially since some of the interested parties mentioned are among the most solvent clubs of all. Manchester United, Chelsea FC, Bayern Munich and recently Spurs from Tottenham have all been linked to a Kobel commitment.

According to “Blick”, a transfer fee of 40 to 50 million euros for Kobel is now “realistic” – especially if BVB actually manages to convince its number one of a new signature.
