A disaster scenario occurred tonight for goalkeeper Hobie Verhulst. The native of Zaankanter made his appearance in the AZ flagship for the first time this season and within fifteen minutes he had already conceded three goals. “We can do much better,” said the goalkeeper.
PSV’s 0-1 came from a penalty after Verhulst had knocked down Malik Tillman in the box. “I see him coming and he is just a little faster. I should have made a better choice. Unfortunate moment,” the 30-year-old goalkeeper looks back on the first of the four goals conceded against PSV.
“I have to accept that, but then you just continue working hard”
Verhulst was in the starting line-up because Rome Jayden Owusu-Oduro was not fit from the European match against Legia Warsaw. Due to the stormy development of Owusu-Oduro, Verhulst was told by the technical staff that he is now the third goalkeeper in the selection for the time being. Verhulst: “I have to accept that, but then you just continue to work hard. And so you see that another opportunity will come.”

White tissues
AZ coach Pascal Jansen was clear to the media after the 0-4. “This was a punishment. You have to be so realistic. PSV was much better,” said Jansen, who also saw that white handkerchiefs were visible in the audience. “It’s fun and different. Expectations are high here. It makes sense that people express their emotions and take the man ultimately responsible into account.”
