The appeals committee of the global football association FIFA has rejected football director Marc Overmars’ appeal against his worldwide ban. A FIFA press officer emailed this on Wednesday NRC. reported Wednesday afternoon Het Parool this decision is based on Overmars’ spokesperson.
The disciplinary committee of the Dutch Sports Jurisdiction Institute suspended Overmars for two years from mid-November 2023, of which one year is conditional. This is due to cross-border messages during his period as director of football affairs at Ajax. Exactly two years ago, Overmars left Ajax for that reason.
At the beginning of last month, FIFA’s disciplinary committee decided to implement the national ruling worldwide. Overmars, technical director at the Belgian club Royal Antwerp FC since March 2022, appealed against this because he found the worldwide suspension “disproportionate”.
“The appeal committee has decided to reject the appeal of Mr Marc Overmars,” writes the FIFA spokesperson.
Pay costs
This decision can still be appealed to the international sports tribunal CAS. Frank Neervoort, spokesperson for Overmars, says when asked that he does not yet know whether they will do that. “We first want to study the explanation of the rejection of the appeal.”
If Overmars decides to appeal to the CAS, he will still not be able to carry out his duties at Royal Antwerp FC in the meantime. “An appeal does not have a suspensive effect,” says Neervoort.
The costs incurred in the disciplinary proceedings at FIFA must be paid by Overmars, according to the ruling he received from the chairman of the appeal committee. These costs amount to more than 1,000 euros.
Due to the rejection of his appeal, Overmars is not allowed to exercise his current position as technical director at Royal Antwerp FC until November 16, 2024.
