FIFA, compensation to clubs for a player who gets injured: the contract and the figures

The Gavi case reignites an old controversy between teams and national teams: this is what the Club Protection Program provides

Gavi won’t see the field until the end of the season, but the only, very small consolation is that Barcelona will earn something. Compensation that is rightfully due to all those clubs that are forced to give up their players after an injury playing for the national team.

season over

The Spanish midfielder, born in 2004, one of the best players available to this morning. Nothing European, therefore. Gavi could miss up to 9 months, and it seems that Barcelona are really annoyed, according to what the Spanish media say. Especially because Spain had already qualified and the match didn’t count for anything.

the agreement

However, Barcelona will receive a fairly substantial compensation thanks to the “Club Protection Program”, i.e. an insurance policy stipulated between FIFA and the club companies which covers the risk of injury to players during matches with the national teams. This program came into force in 2012, before the European Championships in Ukraine and Poland won by Spain. The contract reads: “The agreement compensates football teams up to a maximum of 7.5 million euros per player for injury. The maximum of 7.5 million is calculated on the basis of a daily “pro rata” of compensation up to 20,548 euros, payable for a maximum of 365 days. The maximum daily allowance is limited to 20,548 euros per injury. The maximum capacity of the FIFA Club Protection Program is 80 million per year.” And again: “The compensation to be paid is based on the fixed salary that the club pays directly to the player. The remuneration does not include variable amounts, one-off payments, payments not made on a regular basis or any bonuses such as performance bonuses.”

neymar

One of the most striking cases is that of Neymar, out at least ten months due to a bad ankle injury suffered against Brazil. In this case, since the stop lasts more than 28 days, Al-Hilal will receive compensation. The amount varies based on the number of days of suspension and above all on the player’s salary. Neymar earns around one hundred million euros a year, while Gavi earns around seven million gross. Al-Hilal, therefore, will have a higher compensation.
