Germany’s women’s hockey team will meet the top favorites, the Netherlands, in the first round of the Field World Championships.
In the draw for the World Cup, which takes place from July 1st to 17th in Amstelveen in the Netherlands and in Terrassa in Spain, the “Danas” came into group A of the world champions and Olympic champions.
Other preliminary round opponents are Ireland, vice world champions from 2018, and debutant Chile. “What could be cooler than playing against the Netherlands at a World Cup in the Netherlands,” said the new women’s national coach Valentin Altenburg.
The first of the four preliminary round groups go directly to the quarter-finals. The runners-up and third-placed groups will play a round of 16 beforehand. While the tournament will initially take place separately in both countries (groups A and B in Amstelveen, Wagener Stadium, groups C and D in Terrassa, Olympic Stadium), from the quarter-finals onwards it will only be played in the suburbs of Barcelona. “Our clear goal will therefore be to travel to Spain during the World Cup,” said Altenburg, who is the successor to Belgian Xavier Reckinger. “We want to experience the whole setup of this World Cup.”
