Just as Ferrari presented Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz’s new SF-24 online, the FIA defined an important step in its medium and short-term future. After the farewell of technical director Tim Goss and sporting director Steve Nielsen, who in recent weeks had resigned from their institutional roles – it is rumored because they disagreed with the line pursued by the controversial president Mohammed Ben Sulayem – thehe Federation has announced the arrival of Jan Monchaux at the top of the single-seater technical department. The French engineer, born in 1978, was the technical director of Alfa Romeo Sauber until June 2023 before being replaced by the designer former head of the McLaren project, James Key.

NEW FIA MANAGERS

In the federal organizational chart Monchaux then takes Goss’s place, who starting next October will instead join Racing Bulls, the former AlphaTauri and Toro Rosso, as supervisor of the entire technical area (he will be Chief Technical Officer). The new signing of the Federation will instead refer to Nikolas Tombazis, former Ferrari technical director who since January 2023 has been responsible for all regulatory aspects of FIA open-wheel competitions. In recent weeks the other resigning manager Steve Nielsen had been replaced in the role of sporting director through the internal promotion of Tim Malyon, an engineer already in the Federation since 2019 with a past in Red Bull F1 and BMW (between DTM and Formula E).

MONCHAUX SPEAKS

“I’m very happy – he explains Monchaux – to join FIA as technical director and I can’t wait to face the new challenges that this role brings. I have worked on the team side for many years, but the opportunity to help define the future of the sport in governing body is a prospect that excites me.” “I want to welcome me to FIA – he adds Tombazis – to Jan, who will have an important role in the technical department to establish the future technical regulations of Formula 1. His arrival strengthens our technical knowledge.”
