FIA launched a search for new F1 teams

New stables must meet strict application criteria.

The Participant list of the F1 series is growing. PDO

The international automobile association FIA starts the application process for new F1 teams.

The umbrella organization of auto sports says in its press release that it is exploring the possibility of expanding the number of participants in the F1 series from the current ten teams. The press release does not state the exact amount of growth, but the speech is in the plural form of “stables”.

The FIA requires every new team candidate to state in their application how they will be able to be carbon neutral by 2030. In addition, the new team must tell what kind of positive effects its entry into the F1 series would bring. These conditions are valid for the first time.

The current stables are cramped

The previous completely new team in the F1 series is Haas, which joined the sport in 2016. Since then, there have been plenty of name and owner changes, but the actual stables have remained the same.

The hugely increased popularity of the F1 series in recent years has attracted new aspirants. However, the current ten teams have reservations about the expansion of the series. Increasing the number of participants would eat into the current teams’ share of the series’ income distribution.

Chairman of Fia Mohammed bin Sulayem says that the umbrella organization feels that the F1 series is currently healthy enough for newcomers. It is possible to make the current teams sympathetic to the series’ growth if the current revenue distribution policy is reformed.

New teams are expected to join the series in the 2026 season at the earliest, when the new power source rules come into force. Audi, which was involved at the time, joins the F1 circuit by buying the team of Sauber, now Alfa Romeo.

Along with Porsche, there have been rumors of an American team in the series. Andretti Autosport wants to join, either with or without Cadillac.
