Feyenoord optimistic about financial future despite loss of millions | Dutch football

Feyenoord has suffered a net loss of 4.5 million euros for the 2021-2022 financial year. Since major transfers were only realized after July 1, they did not count for the past financial year, so that the player result was 10 million euros negative. This resulted in a loss of 4.5 million after interest and taxes.

Over the past financial year, Feyenoord saw turnover grow by 41 percent compared to the 2020-2021 season, to 87 million euros. In 2020-2021, turnover was still under pressure as a result of the measures against the corona virus, the growth in the past financial year was entirely due to the success in the Conference League. Feyenoord reached the final in that tournament. This resulted in a modest operating profit of 1 million euros, an improvement of 5 million euros compared to a year earlier.

Financial director Pieter Smorenburg says in an explanation: ,,The transfers of players such as Tyrell Malacia, Luis Sinisterra, Marcos Senesi and Fredrik Aursnes have brought in almost 70 million euros after 1 July. These funds are spread over several years and all kinds of costs and taxes are deducted from it, but in the end we are left with an amount between 45 and 50 million euros. We have reinvested the majority of this, because we want to realize our sporting ambitions again this season. Because although the financial position had to and must improve for further growth, our sporting goals are of course central.”

Feyenoord sees the financial future positively. Smorenburg: ,,For 2022-’23, we expect to equal last season’s turnover. The net result, as a result of the transfers realized this summer, will be positive.”
