Feyenoord had a bad general on Sunday for the Conference League final against AS Roma. The team of trainer Arne Slot lost in De Kuip against FC Twente: 1-2. AZ closed the season with a home defeat against RKC Waalwijk.
Halfway through, Feyenoord already faced a 0-2 deficit. Dimitris Limnios opened the score on a pass from Ricky van Wolfswinkel, who also took care of the preparatory work for Gijs Smal’s 0-2. In the second half, Cyriel Dessers signed for the Rotterdam goal.
Feyenoord did not get further than the connection goal. The team of trainer Arne Slot could not lose third place on the final day of the Eredivisie. The team of trainer Ron Jans was already certain of fourth place and with that a ticket for the third preliminary round of the Conference League.
Although not a few interests were at stake, trainer Slot largely sent his strongest eleven into the field. Only Gernot Trauner and Reiss Nelson pulled out as a precaution. The pair were replaced by Marcus Pedersen and Alireza Jahanbakhsh.
Feyenoord opponent AS Roma also had a disappointing weekend. The team of coach José Mourinho played a draw against the already relegated Venezia, but will still play against Torino in the run-up to the Conference League final (May 25).
Orkun Kökçü was injured at Feyenoord.
No convincing performance from Marciano
Feyenoord coach Slot indicated in the run-up to the duel with FC Twente that he wanted to end “an incredible season” with dignity in a full Kuip. However, little came of that intention, because the home team created hardly any chances and saw FC Twente score twice in the first half.
Goalkeeper Ofir Marciano did not make a great impression on either goal. At the 0-1, the Israeli did not intervene decisively when Van Wolfswinkel turned up for him. Due to the poor goalkeeping work, the striker was able to give in to Limnios, who simply tapped in.
Ten minutes later, Smal had an easy shot, as Marciano was out of position this time, leaving the short corner open. Due to the indecisive action of the keeper, hopes will increase in Rotterdam that Justin Bijlow will be fit in time for the Conference League final.
Although Dessers still signed for the connecting goal in the second half after a combination with Luis Sinisterra, Feyenoord was also unable to create much in the second half. The injury of Orkun Kökçü was an extra downer for Slot. It is not yet clear what the seriousness of the midfielder’s injury is.
AZ went down against RKC Waalwijk.
AZ loses to RKC Waalwijk
There was also nothing at stake for AZ during the last round. The team of trainer Pascal Jansen enters the play-offs for European football as number five. The Alkmaarders took on RKC, which was already certain of enforcement.
The fact that there was nothing more at stake was mainly due to the lack of sharpness of the home team. The Alkmaarders failed to open the score, after which RKC striker Finn Stokkers scored the opening goal in the eighteenth minute.
Just before half time, Dani de Wit scored the equalizer with a good header, but in the second half RKC still took the game to itself. Jurien Gaari gave the team of coach Joseph Oosting the lead again, after which Roy Kuijpers closed the game.
