Fewer trains from September due to a staff shortage at NS, what does that mean for you?

More frequent transfers, fewer trains and perhaps the journey will take a little longer, the Dutch Railways has announced that fewer trains will be used from September 5 due to the staff shortage that the carrier is struggling with. Also in the timetable for next year, 10 percent fewer trains will be used on a structural basis.

From September 5, there will be four intercity trains per hour on weekdays, while there are currently six. This means, for example, that a train no longer runs between Amsterdam and Eindhoven every 10 minutes, but every 15 minutes.

On many routes, two intercity trains per hour are cancelled, and where the evening timetable still starts at 10 p.m., it will be from 5 September from 8 p.m.

A spokesperson for the NS informs NH Nieuws that there are still not as many travelers taking the train as in 2019, before the pandemic. “Compared to what travelers are now used to, it will be a bit busier,” she says about the changes in the timetable. “Trains are already being canceled on some routes, so perhaps not much will change for those travelers.”

Next year

The timetable for next year will start on December 11. The NS will then use 10 percent fewer trains. This will become noticeable, for example, for people who want to travel from Alkmaar to Maastricht, as this train will soon not go further than Amsterdam Central. “Travellers will have to transfer there,” the spokesperson said. The evening timetable will also continue to take effect from 20:00 and during off-peak hours, in the evenings and at weekends, the carrier will run intercity trains and sprinters every half hour, whereas this is now every 15 minutes.

The ten-minute trains between Amsterdam and Eindhoven will run again from Monday to Thursday from 11 December.

Relay Strike

Tomorrow, NS staff will stop working in the Northern Netherlands. As a result, there are virtually no NS trains in the provinces. Friesland, Groningen, Drenthe and parts of Flevoland and Overijssel. The strike day is the first in a relay strike announced by the unions after collective bargaining negotiations failed. Our province is Monday next week turn.
