Fewer road deaths in Brabant again

Last year there were 91 fatal traffic victims in Brabant. That is the lowest number of deaths since 2013. The number of road deaths in our province has been falling since 2018.

Brabant is no longer the province with the most road deaths. In 2021, most road casualties occurred in Gelderland and South Holland, each with 94 road deaths, according to figures from Statistics Netherlands (CBS).

The number of road deaths in Brabant in the past ten years:

  • 2011: 118
  • 2012: 105
  • 2013: 81
  • 2014: 100
  • 2015: 117
  • 2016: 113
  • 2017: 98
  • 2018: 150

Fewer road deaths nationally too
Last year, 582 people died nationwide after a traffic accident. That is 28 fewer than in 2020. Just like in Brabant, the number of road deaths has been falling nationally since 2018.

Most road deaths are to be regretted among cyclists. Last year, 207 cyclists were killed. This is less than in 2020, when 229 cyclists died in an accident. Among the bicycle deaths were 80 e-bikers.

The number of motorists involved in accidents also decreased (175 last year compared to 195 in 2020). The number of people who died on motorcycles and mopeds actually increased.

More men than women
More men than women died in traffic. In 2021, 427 men died in traffic, 26 fewer than in 2020. In 2021 there were 155 road deaths among women, in 2020 there were 157.

One of the fatal accidents last year was on the Heeklaan in Helmond. Teenagers Levi (15), Anthony (16) and Elvis (16) were killed when the car they were in collided with an ambulance.
