Fewer permits for new construction in Drenthe, especially shrinkage in owner-occupied houses

The number of permits issued for building new homes in Drenthe has decreased. In 2023, a permit was issued 1,178 times. The year before, this happened more than 1,300 times, according to figures from Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS).

The differences between permits for owner-occupied and rental properties are striking. In Drenthe, 530 permits were issued last year for building an owner-occupied home; 36 percent less than in 2022, when 830 owner-occupied houses were allowed to be built.

This picture has been reversed for rental properties, as more permits were issued for this last year. This concerns almost 650 units, compared to 518 in 2022. This is an increase of 25 percent.

If you take the owner-occupied and rental houses together, 12 percent fewer permits have been issued in Drenthe.

In addition to our province, the number of new construction permits for rental homes also increased in Gelderland, Overijssel, Flevoland, North Holland and Utrecht. The latter province takes the cake; 80 percent more rental houses may be built there.
