Fewer fireworks sellers, but demand is increasing: ‘Expect a huge stampede’

If you want to buy decorative arrows or silencers this year, chances are you have to drive a little further for them. Almost a third of the fireworks sellers in Drenthe stop, while the demand for fireworks has actually increased.

For the past two years, no fireworks were allowed to be sold due to the corona measures. Many sellers seize this moment to stop. One of them is Roelof Klinkhamer from Sleen. After twenty-five years, he gives up. “We ran out of stock anyway because it couldn’t be done for two years. I think this is the best time to stop.”

He especially denounces the uncertainty surrounding the sale of fireworks: “There was a fireworks ban. That was already a bit of a debatable event. Well, not, well not, that’s how it always went. So I said to my wife: we’re doing it all the way.” not anymore.”

Sleeners will therefore have to drive a little further this year for their fireworks. For example twenty minutes by car to Nieuw-Weerdinge. At family business Van der Veen Vuurwerk, father, son, uncle and grandmother are already busy with orders.

“This year we expect a huge stampede on fireworks,” says Hans-Hendrik van der Veen. “If we now look at what is already happening online, the number of pre-orders has already exploded. That is breaking all records at the moment.”
