Fewer fines for driving without a helmet in Drenthe

The number of fines for driving without a helmet has decreased in Drenthe in 2021. Compared to a year earlier, the number of fines decreased by 31 percent. This is apparent from an analysis of figures from the Central Judicial Collection Agency (CJIB) by ANP/LocalFocus.

In Drenthe, 140 fines were handed out last year for driving without a helmet on a moped, motorcycle or speed pedelec. A year earlier, there were still 205.

Nationally, the number of fines handed out rose by 6 percent. Almost 17,000 fines were issued in the Netherlands last year. There was a significant increase in North Holland and South Holland in particular.

Most fines in Drenthe were handed out in Emmen (34), followed by Assen (26) and Hoogeveen (25). Relatively speaking, Meppel had the highest number with 5.2 fines per 10,000 inhabitants. Hoogeveen (4.5) and Assen (3.8) follow in second and third place.

As a driver or co-driver of a motorcycle, moped or speed pedelec it is mandatory to wear a helmet. This is not the case on a moped, unless you ride it on the road. This will change from this autumn or from 1 January 2023, and moped riders will also have to wear helmets. Even when they ride on the bike path.
