Fettes Brot: “Hitstory” (Review & Stream)

The rappers from the Hamburger Baumschule were always a joke ahead of the rest of the German-speaking choral society – at least in the 1990s. Fischmob, Deichkind, Five Stars Deluxe, and of course Fettes Brot – the names alone were already announced. While the Rödelheimer Moses Pelham picked up journalists in S-class limousines to make them taste a new album over a glass of bubbly, Fettes Brot never cared about a re-enactment of the then popular gangsta rap.

Unfortunately, the fun is over now

Instead, there were pranks, like the video for “Jein”, which had a Mexican desperado look. Sombreros, sweeping mustaches and the rappers on donkeys made up for the fact that the music sounded a lot like the Fantastischen Vier. Dokter Renz, König Boris and Björn Beton weren’t too bad about any shit. That differentiated them, especially at the beginning, from the dead serious representatives of pure hip-hop teaching around the “MzeeMagazin”.

Unfortunately, the fun is over now. Because the Fette Brote are coming to an end after thirty years and a considerable number of hits. The largest can be found on “hit story”“Nordisch By Nature”, the trio’s first big smasher, can be heard in a version with a gauze mattress and the buddies Der Tobi & das Bo. The charms of the north are sung about in Low German. Why the song is hidden? Maybe because people in the taciturn north are quickly seen as talkers?

“Emanuela” was the heart’s candidate for Stefan Raab’s Bundesvision Song Contest in 2005. A catchy tune that everyone who has had enough to drink still jumps onto the dance floor to spontaneous polonaises. The highlight of the album is, as expected, “Bettina, please put something on”. The beat thumps delightfully tight as the Modeselektor-boosted trio takes a close look at their increasing impotence in the face of our society’s hyper-sexualized consumer hell
