Ferrari has to replace two engine components after Charles Leclerc’s retirement at the Spanish Grand Prix. It concerns the turbo and the MGU-H, the Italian racing stable said on Monday.
According to Ferrari, the MGU-H and turbo are so damaged that they can no longer be repaired. For Leclerc this means that he has to fall back on a previously used turbo or MGU-H for both parts. Earlier this season, Ferrari had already replaced both parts on Leclerc’s car. Another alternative is that Leclerc has to use his third turbo and MGU-H.
If Ferrari and Leclerc choose the latter option, then there are probably grid penalties lurking later this season. Every driver is allowed to use only three turbos and MGU-Hs with impunity this year. When a fourth part is used, a grid penalty follows.
The MGU-H, a complex component of the power unit, ensures that the heat from the exhaust is converted into electrical power. This is used in combination with the turbo.
Verstappen does not have to fear grid penalties yet
Max Verstappen does not have to be afraid of possible grid penalties for the time being. Despite two outages, the Dutchman still used his first power source in Spain.
Leclerc was in the lead at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya on Sunday when his Ferrari gave up the ghost. Verstappen took full advantage and hit a double with a Grand Prix victory and the lead in the standings. The Formula 1 season will be continued this weekend with the Monaco Grand Prix.
