The Scuderia experienced a very bitter day in Baku, both Ferrari drivers did not reach the finish line – world champion Max Verstappen benefited, and Sebastian Vettel also celebrated a sense of achievement.
Fifth victory in the eighth race of the Formula 1 season: Max Verstappen won the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. The world champion prevailed in his Red Bull in front of teammate Sergio Perez, George Russell (Mercedes) took third place. Ferrari experienced a very bitter day once again: Both Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc retired with defects in their cars, the deficit World title race to the Red Bull is thus getting bigger and bigger.
Instead, Sebastian Vettel was able to celebrate a sense of achievement, the Aston Martin driver finished sixth. Mick Schumacher finished 14th in the race, in which four drivers had to park their cars early (Sainz, Leclerc, Zhou Guanyou in the Alfa Romeo and Schumacher teammate Kevin Magnussen).
Verstappen very satisfied
“Today was great, we had good pace and were able to keep extending our lead,” said Verstappen. “We were also lucky with the failures, but everything can change again at any time.” Perez struggled a bit with a pit stop that didn’t quite go as planned: “It wasn’t the best, but it’s a good result for the team.”
In the World Championship standings, Verstappen leads with 150 points ahead of Perez with 129. Leclerc is third with 116 points and is already well behind the leader.
