Schmidt and Unterhauser: friends in a duel on the Planche

The two teammates coached each other in the semi-finals and gave each other tips on how to reach the final. The friendship was temporarily suspended on the Planche.

Neither of the two epee fencers was able to break away decisively, but Unterhauser was often in the lead. Schmidt demanded everything from his colleague and always stayed close and equalized several times. In the last round, after an exciting, tactical battle, Unterhauser was able to land the decisive hits with two lightning-fast actions.

Club-internal duel also in the women’s saber final

In the women’s saber fencing, Julika Funke won 15:9 against her club mate Anna-Lena Bürkert, with whom she had already defeated Dormagen’s team saber fencing team on Saturday.

The duel between the two saber fencers from FC Würth Künzelsau was an intense one, although the opponents fought with different strategies. Funke did not move away from her aggressive fencing style in the final – she had already attacked briskly against Liska Derkum in the semifinals. Right at the beginning she managed a run against Derkum.

In the final, Bürkert parried and countered strongly, relying on her defensive qualities in parades and ripostes. Funke’s aggressiveness ensured a temporary 7:2 lead in the first round, but Bürkert initially reacted calmly and fought back. Ultimately, however, Funke had the upper hand with her courageous style.
