Fencer Daniël Giacon recently took a historic medal. He took bronze at the World Cup in Belgrade, making him the first Dutch male foil fencer to do so. “Afterwards I even said to my trainer I’m dreaming?”, said a beaming Giacon.
Olympics
NH Sport has been making reports about the fencer from Aalsmeer since 2011. He wanted to go to the Olympics from an early age. Those of 2024 in Paris are therefore the goal. “This is really a breakthrough. I have a chance to go to the Games. We can also reach this level as a small country. I win from people who get paid and that gives a very good feeling to continue,” said Giacon .
“When you can get a medal at this level, Olympic qualification is not impossible”
NOC-NSF
The 21-year-old Aalsmeerder is currently following a HBO study and then trains in the evenings and weekends. His trainer Daniël Nivard hopes that will change soon. “We hope that we can visit NOC-NSF and that a route to Paris can be drawn up. If you can achieve a medal at this level, Olympic qualification is not impossible,” says Nivard.
