Sun, sea and beach: it was impossible for Femke Halsema recently. She was enjoying life on Curaçao with her family. For a moment, the holiday fun threatened to fall into the water when she traveled with her daughter to the idyllic little beach of Kleine Knip. They forgot to bring cash.

Femke on the sand

Femke and her teenage daughter Suzy had taken a seat on a beach bed, but when the beach manager arrived, they were unable to pay. He didn’t accept credit cards.

It was terrible, can be read in the Story. “It was a painful situation because the manager was relentless, and asked mother and daughter to sit on a towel on the hot sand if they couldn’t pay; the debit card that Femke conjured up could not be used.”

Auxiliaries

Fortunately, the Dutch saw what happened. “A couple of Dutch people lying behind Femke on the beach couldn’t bear to see it. They joked to her: ‘We cannot accept the mayor of our capital who has to sit on the sand! We are happy to offer you the beds. After all, you’ve worked hard enough for it.’”

Femke suggested to send a Tikkie. “However, her brave lifesavers did not want to hear about that.”

GreenLeft

The Story also wonders whether Femke’s party GroenLinks is happy with this. The magazine points out that Curaçao is about 8,000 kilometers away. “The left-wing party thinks the airplane is the most polluting form of transport, which entails environmental pollution and noise pollution.”

The photos of Femke on her beach bed are in the latest Story, edition number 9
