Femke Bol conquers silver at World Athletics Championships, sensational world record McLaughlin | NOW

In the night from Friday to Saturday, Femke Bol won silver in the 400 meters hurdles at the World Athletics Championships in Eugene. The gold went to American Sydney McLaughlin, who set a sensational world record: 50.68.

The 22-year-old Bol came in her first World Cup final hurdles to a time of 52.27, while she had hoped to dive under 52 seconds. Her personal best is 52.03 and that is her bronze race at the Olympic Games in Tokyo.

The 22-year-old McLaughlin became Olympic champion in Tokyo and made her favorite status again at the World Championships in Eugene. A month ago she already improved her own world record to 51.41, after which she went into hiding there on Friday evening (local time) in the Hayward Field Stadium with 50.68. It is the first world record of this World Cup.

Bol had previously hoped for gold, but she can be content with silver. De Amersfoortse was faster in Eugene than the 32-year-old defending champion Dalilah Muhammad, who took bronze in 53.13. Last year at the Games, Bol was beaten by the experienced American.

Bol is now on two World Cup medals

The silver is Bol’s second medal this World Cup. A week ago she also took silver, when mixed with the relay team in the 4×400 meters.

Next weekend, Bol will also run the 4×400 meters with the women and a medal is also possible in that part.

In total, the Netherlands has now won four medals in this World Cup. Anouk Vetter took silver in the heptathlon and there was bronze for Jessica Schilder in the shot put.

Bol was not the only Dutch who ran a final on the eighth day of this World Cup. Lieke Klaver finished in a creditable fourth place in the 400 meters.
