Female referee team is a novelty in France

Pioneer Stéphanie Frappart can look forward to another premiere.

The first female referee at a men’s World Cup will join Manuela Nicolosi and Élodie Coppola to form the first all-female refereeing duo in France’s Ligue 1 for next Sunday’s match between ES Troyes AC and AS Monaco.

Only the fourth referee, who is more concerned with administrative tasks, will be male. This was announced by the French football association FFF.

Frappart had already directed her first game in France’s top division as the main referee in April 2019, but at the time she was assisted on the lines by male colleagues. At the World Cup in Qatar, the French refereed the group game between Germany and Costa Rica and received good reviews after the historic premiere.

The three referees Frappart, Nicolosi and Coppola have also been nominated by the world association FIFA for the women’s World Cup next summer in Australia and New Zealand.
