Former boxing world champion Felix Sturm is taking sporting consequences because of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine.
“I would not currently get into the ring against a Russian boxer,” said the 43-year-old from “Bild am Sonntag”.
“We are in solidarity with the people of Ukraine and have organized an aid convoy with the LIB Boxpromotion. Three tons of aid were brought to the Ukrainian border and 98 refugees brought to Hamburg. War is a terrible thing, especially for children and the elderly”, such storm.
Sturm’s next opponent is Hungarian Istvan Szili. On March 26th, in the Westfalenhalle in Dortmund, the elimination fight will be about the chance of a World Cup duel.
“Should I win there, it’s about the IBO World Championships. If it should work out with a title unification, that would be great. But first I want my sixth world title,” said Sturm.
In 2019, the former champion of the WBO, WBA and IBF associations was in custody for more than eight months and was later found guilty of tax evasion. Sturm made his comeback in December 2020.
