As a player, Felix Magath became a legend at Hamburger SV. The club is still his heart club today – and it worries him.
HSV icon Felix Magath has blamed the management problems at the second division soccer team from Hamburg for the sporting failure of the past few years. “If you have problems in the lead, sooner or later it will also affect the team below,” said the former European Cup winner with HSV at the “Sky90” talk on Sunday: “That’s why they say in Hamburg: The fish stinks from the head.”
The relationship between sports director Jonas Boldt and the controversial CFO Thomas Wüstefeld has been tense for months. The supervisory board, headed by HSV President Marcell Jansen, is avoiding a clear positioning in the power struggle. Ex-sports director Michael Mutzel has now sued successfully in court against HSV and Boldt.
“If you don’t have a function, you can only watch”
Bayern’s sports director Hasan Salihamidzic brought up Magath’s engagement with the north Germans. “As Hamburger SV I would always fall back on Felix Magath’s skills,” said the former HSV professional: “He knows the city, the management, the environment. I think that’s a matter close to Felix’s heart, I would like that see.”
Magath himself does not seem to be averse to taking on a job in professional football again after his successful rescue mission at Hertha BSC – in the relegation against Hamburger SV. “But if you don’t have a role, all you can do is watch and cross your fingers – that’s all you can do,” he said. There hasn’t been a request from HSV yet, but Magath added with a smile: “I’ll be back in Hamburg on Wednesday.” The funeral service for HSV legend Uwe Seeler, who died on July 21, will take place in the Volksparkstadion on Wednesday.
