Felipe VI avoids the photo with his father despite coinciding in the goodbye to Elizabeth II

  • The King and Juan Carlos I participate together in the reception offered by Carlos III in London one day before the funeral

Felipe VI and Juan Carlos I have coincided again in an act this Sunday for the first time since the emeritus monarch went to live in Abu Dhabi pressed for his problems with the law. A reception offered by Charles III, the new King of England, one day before the funeral of Elizabeth II, has been the scene that has led to the reunion. Nevertheless, Zarzuela has achieved its goal of preventing joint images of both from being takenin his effort to free the king from his father’s abuses.

The discomfort of the kings with the situation became clear since, a few days ago, it was confirmed that Juan Carlos would also be in London to say goodbye to Elizabeth II. And it increased after it became known that the king emeritus would also attend the reception that, one day before the funeral, would be offered by Carlos III, which has managed to bring together hundreds of international leaders and heads of state.

However, and as happened when they saw each other on May 23 at Zarzuela, in what was the first family reunion since Juan Carlos moved to the United Arab Emirates, there was no press present at the timeand Felipe has avoided the photo with his father.

From Zarzuela they have underlined in recent days, after announcing that both the King and Queen and the monarch’s parents would come to London, that everything related to the organization and protocol belonged to the British authoritiesso the British royal family could spread an image of them.

The reception offered by King Carlos III and Queen Camilla is unprecedented, given the large number of guests. Among them there was kings, presidents and prime ministers from all over the world, as well as the most prominent figures in British political life, including the new ‘premier’ Liz Truss.

Many of the attendees, including the kings of Spain, have arrived at Buckingham Palace aboard several buses. Juan Carlos and Sofía had arrived about an hour earlier on another of those buses. The emeritus king, with clear mobility problems, walked leaning on a cane and an assistant, with the emeritus queen at his side, both in deep mourning.

Before, Felipe and Queen Letizia had already paid their respects to the body of Elizabeth II, which in recent days has received thousands of farewell visits from British citizens shocked by the loss. It has been from 7:00 p.m. when both have coincided with the emeritus kings at Buckingham Palace.

The march of the emeritus

The emeritus king left Spain in 2020 following investigations into his financial irregularities. Felipe VI and Juan Carlos I already saw each other last May in La Zarzuela, after Juan Carlos traveled to Galicia, but no images emerged.

Juan Carlos has traveled separately of the Spanish delegation. Felipe VI, Letizia and Queen Sofía have traveled to London from Madrid with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares. Once in the British capital, the former monarch will stay with his wife in a hotelwhile the king and Letizia will stay at the residence of the Spanish ambassador.

The Government and La Zarzuela have explained that Juan Carlos I attends the events in a personal capacity. The former monarch has not wanted to give up the invitation that the British royal family sent him in his capacity as former head of state to be at the funeral of Elizabeth II, with whom he was also related, since both were great-great-grandchildren of Queen Victoria of England, reports Europa Press.

Open court front

It so happens that the United Kingdom is the only country where Juan Carlos I still has an open judicial front due to the lawsuit filed by his ex-lover, Corinna Larsen, who accuses him of having harassed her and He claims financial compensation for it..

The businesswoman went to the London Supreme Court in December 2020 to file a lawsuit accusing the former monarch and the Spanish secret services of harassing her since 2012 through threats, defamation and even “illegal surveillance”.

According to Larsen’s account, the harassment would have begun after she ended the relationship they had maintained, first to try to get her back and then as a revenge for harming her business.
