Suddenly there is some pressure on AZ’s second match in the Conference League. After losing painfully to Zrinjski Mostar (4-3) two weeks ago, a good result against Legia Warsaw is suddenly very important. “We have to take revenge,” said midfielder Jordy Clasie a day before the match.
In Bosnia-Herzegovina, AZ lost after an insane match. They led 0-3 and there seemed to be no problem, but Zrinjski Mostar eventually won 4-3. That defeat reverberated for a long time in Alkmaar. To survive the winter in the Conference League, AZ must finish in the first two, which makes a result very desirable.
Live blog
A live blog will appear on our website tomorrow in the afternoon with all developments surrounding the European matches of Ajax and AZ. The Amsterdam team kicks off in the Europa League against AEK Athens at 6:45 PM and AZ starts the match against Legia Warsaw at 9:00 PM.
Despite the fact that the matches in Europe against SK Brann (1-1 and 3-3) and Zrinsjki (4-3 loss) were difficult, the results in the Premier League are convincing. AZ is second and won six of the seven matches and drew only once. Now interesting weeks await coach Pascal Jansen, because big matches are scheduled with Legia Warschau, Ajax-away, Heerenveen-home and Aston Villa-home.
Surprise
With Legia Warsaw, AZ will meet the number two of last season and the current number two of the Polish league. The team from Warsaw surprised – just like Zrinjski – in the Conference League. At home, English Aston Villa, the favorite to win the group, was defeated 3-2. “They have a very special way of playing,” says Jansen about one of the largest clubs in Poland.
AZ has an almost fit selection against Legia. Riechedly Bazoer is still struggling with an injury, which he sustained in the match against Heracles Almelo (1-1). Jansen does not yet have him available against Legia Warsaw and hopes that he will be available again next weekend against Ajax. Furthermore, the long-term injured Mees de Wit and Sem Westerveld are still out. Bruno Martins Indi is again part of the AZ selection.
Rumor mill
The AZ coach dominated the news in the Scottish football press last week. Jansen was already linked to Celtic earlier this season, but this time he seems to be the right man to leave for Rangers FC. Jansen quickly dismisses an interim departure to Scotland. “I have no idea where it comes from,” says Jansen, who tries to nip the rumors in the bud.
The match between AZ and Legia Warschau starts tomorrow evening at 9 p.m. in Alkmaar.
