Federal prosecutor’s office comes with response after thwarted attack on Miss Belgium election
The police were present en masse and afterwards carried out an extensive check in the room. The federal prosecutor took the threat very seriously and the show could not start until hours later.
Erik van der Sypt of the federal prosecutor’s office: “Yesterday we received information that someone might want to commit an attack on the election of Miss Belgium. That person could be identified and arrested in De Panne yesterday around half past five. He had a firearm with him and there was another firearm in the trunk of his car.”
THOROUGH POLICE CHECK
Before the arrest, the police checked the approach roads to Plopsaland and the exit of the E40, because the police in Limburg had heard about the threat of an attack during the beauty pageant through the man’s environment. The man is from Lommel and is 46 years old. The Limburger was accompanied by a Dutch woman, but she would not have been aware of his plan.
The man is said to have extreme ideas and mental problems, but his exact motives are still unclear: “For the time being, his motives are still unclear. He will appear before the investigating judge today. In any case, he was not known to the police or security services.”
