February storms cause the biggest crowds in years for the fire service

In 2022, the Drenthe fire brigade had to turn out more often than in previous years. In total, the fire service had to be called in 3,738 times for an incident.

According to the Drenthe Safety Region (VRD), this was mainly due to the three storms in February, Dudley, Eunice and Franklin. There have not been as many incidents since 2014 as last year.

The VRD divides incidents into three categories: fire, assistance and alarm. In the past ten years, the years 2012, 2013 and 2014 are the only years in which there were more incidents than in the year 2022. This is mainly because the number of alarm incidents was three times as high in those years.

In 2014, a new handling of alarm incidents was introduced, whereby a follow-up call is made as soon as an automatic alarm goes off. This ensures that the fire brigade has to leave the barracks less often for an incident that turns out to be nothing. The number of alarm incidents fell in the following years from more than 1800 to approximately 600. This resulted in a decrease in the total number of incidents.
