On Instagram, Karsu shares a photo with her aunt. She writes in Turkish and English: ‘Rest in peace my dear aunt. ? Rest in peace, my dear aunt. We love you!!! Your angel is still an angel!’
The heart of Karsu’s extensive family is located in Antakya, in the middle of the disaster area. Her grandmother – well into her eighties – was also under the rubble, but survived the disaster.
After the disaster, family members sent images from the village of Karsu – after which she was named. She experienced several holidays there in the house of her maternal grandparents. “A beautiful house of three or four floors that has now been destroyed. I know it so well there, I could point out at which wall I used to play tag with my grandmother. Although I’ve never lived there myself, I feel very connected to it.”
Karsu already called for help on Tuesday. “It just takes a lot of money. I have just written a thick cookbook with Turkish dishes, which is at the printer.” The money raised with this goes to emergency aid in Turkey.
