“I am struck by the tragic news that several people have died and been injured at a bus stop in the center of Stockholm,” Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson told SVT. “People who may have been on their way home, to family, friends or a quiet evening at home. We do not yet know the cause, but my thoughts go out to those affected and their relatives.”
Bus Stockholm not in service
The situation remains unclear. Witnesses report that several bangs were heard around the time of the accident, followed by screaming and panic. The bus was not in service at the time; only the driver was on board. Immediately after the collision, bystanders provided first aid to injured people lying on the ground.
According to the Stockholm region, five people were hit by the bus. Two of them were transported to hospital by ambulance. Dagens Nyheter reports three fatalities. The police do not yet want to confirm the number of people affected. “We are on site with various patrols and technicians to secure traces,” police spokesperson Nadja Norton told SVT.
Crisis center
A crisis center has now been opened in the center of Stockholm where people can go for support. Large parts of the area have been cordoned off to allow emergency services to do their work. The closure is expected to last until late in the evening; Local residents do not have access to their homes for the time being.
