Fear of several deaths after battle in Mexican stadium, football competition shut down | Foreign football

The Mexican Football Association has temporarily suspended the national competition after violent fan riots at the top-level match between Querétaro and Atlas. Dozens of spectators were injured and according to unconfirmed reports, there were also deaths. The other matches in Mexico this weekend have been postponed, in solidarity with the victims.

After an hour of play, things went wrong in Querétaro’s La Corregidora stadium, with Atlas 1-0. Supporters of both clubs sought a confrontation and clashed in the stands. Security guards decided to open the fences around the field so that supporters could get to safety on the field. The players went into the dressing rooms. There was also fighting outside the stadium.

Shocking images on social media show how some visitors lie motionless in the stands, some in a large pool of blood. Authorities said at least 22 people were injured, but there were no reports of deaths. Mexican media reports 17 dead.

“The Mexican Football Federation regrets and condemns the events that took place at the La Corregidora stadium. Any form of violence is unacceptable.” The Mexican federation promises the authorities help with the investigation and announces that the perpetrators will be punished.

In 2026, the World Cup will be hosted by Mexico, Canada and the United States.
