Fear of amok at the Berlin marathon – drivers rolled into runners

The Berlin Marathon 2021. Despite Corona, almost 30,000 athletes were at the start. And as always, many road closures for motorists.

Apparently, one didn’t care at all: Alexander B. (32, name changed) from Wilmersdorf. At noon on September 26, he backed out of the parking space in his Mercedes – right in the middle of the cluster of runners on the south-west parade.

Which brought him, because no one was hurt, only a process of coercion before the district court. “We were visiting a friend when my pregnant wife suddenly started bleeding,” the real estate agent began. He was therefore in a state of excitement because of a previous miscarriage. “I wanted to take her to the clinic straight away.” But how to get off the median? Everything closed for the runners.

Marshal Hannah B. (19): “He asked for the route to be opened briefly for him. didn’t work The athletes were approaching…” She offered to call an ambulance or the fire department. “He refused. Slowly rolled backwards. Her colleague’s slap on the trunk lid didn’t make him change his mind either. The Mercedes drove into the street, right in the middle of the crowd of marathon runners. Folder Jonathan J. (19): “People screamed, hit desperately or angry on the car roof.”

The judge: “What fears may the runners have suffered? Also panic before a possible assassination? Defendant, you have prevailed against a ban with uncanny persistence. And massively interfered with the safety of other people.”

The defendant: “I’m sorry. I only saw my wife … It was such a dark moment in me.” This “dark moment” costs the previously unpunished person a fine of 5,400 euros and a six-month driving ban.

By the way: The couple then postponed the “so urgent” visit to the clinic by a few days. The defendant: “We drove to my mother’s first. She also has a lot of experience with five children…”
