FDP head of state: keep Ukraine war out of NRW state election campaign

DUISBURG (dpa-AFX) – The North Rhine-Westphalian FDP party leader Joachim Stamp has appealed to all parties to keep the Ukraine war out of the state election campaign. Even shortly before the elections in North Rhine-Westphalia on May 15, nobody should succumb to the temptation “to make political gains with this,” warned the deputy prime minister on Saturday at an FDP state party conference in Duisburg. “The subject is too serious.”

At the same time, Stamp appealed to citizens not to be taken in by Russian President Vladimir Putin’s attempt at division, who is using “expulsion terror” in Ukraine as a means of dividing the host societies. Everyone should approach Putin with two values that he doesn’t know himself, Stamp told around 400 party delegates: “Warmheartedness and humanity.” As Minister in NRW, Stamp is also responsible for refugees and integration.

Even if it is still unclear how the Russian war in Ukraine will develop, it is clear that Germany will master the historic task of offering protection to the refugees. Stamp again assured the municipalities in North Rhine-Westphalia that they would not leave them alone with the admission and accommodation. The country is already creating its own further places./beg/DP/nas
