FCK: Hengen admits: separation from Antwerp “unpopular decision”

Schuster takes over in relegation

The separation from coach Marco Antwerpen at 1. FC Kaiserslautern was not easy for sports director Thomas Hengen. At the press conference where Antwerp’s successor Dirk Schuster was presented, the ex-professional said: “It’s a damn unpopular decision, I didn’t make it easy for myself either.”

Antwerp was surprised when he left FCK and criticized Hengen on “Sport1” in the morning: “I am shocked and saddened by this decision. I wanted to get promoted with this club, I gave everything for it and now this insane decision.” Antwerp took over FCK in February 2021, stabilized them and brought them back from the lower regions of the table to the top third. After three defeats in a row in the important final spurt of the season, FCK pulled the ripcord on Tuesday, after sports director Hengen had publicly criticized the appearance and attitude of the team.

“I don’t know why this person is doing this. The team is behind us as a coaching team and I have to let that sink in for now. I want to thank the boys and these fantastic fans. I hope that the rise will be successful,” Antwerpen continued.

New FCK coach Schuster: Have “nothing to lose” in relegation

Successor Schuster now said that the club “couldn’t lose anything” in the games against Dynamo Dresden: “We have a great opportunity to move up to the second division as a third division team,” he said. His first practice session with the four-time German champions took place without fans, but with considerable media attention at the Fritz Walter Stadium.

Schuster called on the fans to support the first game against Dresden: “50,000 spectators will definitely be there, we need the wall again.” came around the corner”. However, the new boss also admitted that it was “a bit tough” at the beginning of the session.

Hengen said: “We can achieve great things in two games, everyone must be aware of that. This is really about the future of the club.” It is not known whether Schuster will continue to work for Kaiserslautern after the relegation games. The former Aue and Darmstadt coach said: “Contract details will not be commented on from our side. We have a task ahead of us. I hope that I can stay here for a long time.”
