FC Volendam empty-handed after first home game in the Eredivisie against NEC

Jonk had in contrast to last week against FC Groningen (2-2) a base place for Henk Veerman. As a result, Ibrahim el Kadiri started on the bench. Jasper Cillessen started as a goalkeeper for the first time at NEC.

The first big chance of the game was for the visitors. In the switch, Pedro Marquez failed to slide in the cross from the right. In the 11th minute it was hit, but on the other hand: Benaissa Benamar sent a masterly pass to Van Mieghem who shot the ball past the keeper of Orange. Four minutes later, Derry John Murkin nearly doubled the score. Cillessen misjudged the left back’s long shot, but was lucky that the ball fell on the roof of the goal.

After this perilous moment, NEC turned the game around in no time. The Volendam defense lost two consecutive headers on a throw-in, after which Elayis Tavsan was able to successfully print: 1-1. In the 19th minute Oussama Tannane scored the 1-2. The midfielder got the ball from Marques and knocked Brian Plat up to speed. Tannane shot through the inside post.

FC Volendam had a few good opportunities to come alongside again in the remainder of the first half. Robert Mühren headed on the crossbar beyond Cillessen’s reach and with another head chance he just failed to reach Henk Veerman. On the stroke of half-time, the NEC goalkeeper made a nice save on a long shot from El Kadiri, who had come in the field in the 36th minute for the injured Franco Antonucci.

Second half

El Kadiri was again close to a goal after the break, but his shot sailed just over. On the other side, Filip Stankovic had to come into action with a header by Marquez. With a double substitution (Bilal Ould-Chikh and Gaetano Oristanio instead of Billy van Duijl and Henk Veerman), the home team tried to increase the pressure, but the equalizer failed to materialize. In the 76th minute, the Danish duo of NEC closed the game. Lasse Schöne put the ball on the freestanding Mikkel Duelund and he headed the 1-3 against the ropes. The 1-4 of substitute Jordy Bruijn in the 90th minute made the joy of the Nijmegen people even greater.

FC Volendam will not be in action next weekend. The away game against PSV has been postponed because the Eindhoven players have qualified for the play-offs of the Champions League. The next competition match is now at home again on Sunday 28 August, against FC Twente. The following Wednesday, PSV – FC Volendam will be overtaken.
