FC Volendam comes away well with a narrow defeat against PSV

FC Volendam was lucky on Saturday evening that PSV was not in focus on several occasions. This left the score only 3-1, despite the 38 shots. Calvin Twigt ensured the sporting honor of the visitors with a penalty kick. Volendam ended the match with ten men after a red card for Benaissa Benamar.

Volendam had a very difficult time against PSV from the first whistle. For example, Ismael Saibari mowed over the ball from a good cross from Johan Bakayoko and Patrick van Aanholt shot at goalkeeper Mio Backhaus from a promising position in the opening phase. Within fifteen minutes the Eindhoven team took a quick lead. Noa Lang was completely free in the box and could easily score: 1-0.

After the opening goal, PSV remained much stronger than Volendam and we had to wait for the 2-0. Backhaus, however, kept his team going with several saves. His most important came from a header by Luuk de Jong. Bakayoko passed and De Jong seemed to double the score, but Backhaus made a catty save. On the other hand, the Eel farmers once dangerous. Garang Kuol countered towards the enemy goal, but his cross just missed reaching Robert Mühren.

The leader of the Premier League continued to attack happily after the break. Guus Til scored within ninety seconds. The midfielder came on at the start of the second half and worked a cross from Malik Tillman behind Backhaus: 2-0. PSV kept knocking on the door via Lang (Backhaus save) and Oliver Boscagli (ball on the crossbar). Substitute Lequincio Zeefuik came through dangerously, but was stopped by Boscagli. After VAR interference, it turned out that no violation had been committed.

Sporting honor

On the other hand, PSV became dangerous twice. In both cases Backhaus was in the right place. The home team seemed to be aiming for a simple victory, but that changed in an instant. Boscagli floored Zeefuik again and Volendam received a penalty. Calvin Twigt hit the target and saved the honor: 2-1. Benaissa Benamar did not make it to the end of the match after his second yellow card. Tillman then put the final score on the board in injury time: 3-1.

FC Volendam is at the bottom of the Premier League. Almere City won against FC Utrecht and hands over the last place to the Volendam team. Competitor Utrecht, in seventeenth place, will be the opponent next Friday.
