FC Volendam absurdly hands over victory in injury time against NEC

FC Volendam did not manage to win when they visited NEC. Calvin Twigt seemed to help the Eelboeren win with a late goal, until Koki Ogawa struck in the final seconds (3-3). Painfully enough, Volendam played most of the match against ten men after a red card for Elayis Tavsan.

The start was dramatic for the Volendammers. The team was lucky that it did not score more goals in the opening phase. After some fumbling by Mio Backhaus and Calvin Twigt, Koki Ogawa was able to move on easily. He pushed the 1-0 against the ropes. The Japanese seemed to double the score moments later. However, the goalscorer did so from an offside position and VAR intervened. Elayis Tavsan then had a good shooting opportunity, but Backhaus now saved.

Out of nowhere, Robert Mühren (his first outside Volendam this season) scored the equalizer. In two instances he headed George Cox’s cross behind Jasper Cillessen: 1-1. Tavsan then made a stupid foul on Cox and had to receive his second yellow card. In the final phase, Mühren had another opportunity, but Cillessen was able to save.

At the start of the second half, the roles were logically reversed: Volendam attacked and NEC held back. For example, Darius Johnson (header at Cillessen) and Milan de Haan (via the underside of the crossbar) were given opportunities. The home team then took over the initiative again and had a great chance through Ogawa, but it was cleared off the line by Benaissa Benamar.

Insane final phase

De Haan took the lead in the final phase. The midfielder, who also scored against Excelsior last week, shot the ball beautifully behind Cillessen: 1-2. After that it was the proverbial gate of the dam. After a clumsy foul, Magnus Matsson was able to score the 2-2 goal from the penalty spot. From a beautiful free kick by Calvin Twigt, Volendam seemed to win after all, until Ogawa headed home from a corner (3-3).

A positive aspect of the late equalizer is that Volendam rises to sixteenth place on goal difference above FC Utrecht and Vitesse. Sparta is the next opponent in a week. Kick-off is at 2:30 PM.
