FC Twente hoped to increase the pressure at Feyenoord on Friday evening. With a win over Sparta, Ron Jans’ team would, at least for a while, be on the same level as the team from Rotterdam. But there was also a lot at stake for Sparta. Henk Fraser’s team is fighting against relegation and therefore needs the points desperately.
After five minutes, Twente thought they could take a penalty, after referee Danny Makkelie was taken aside by the VAR. However, Makkelie thought the handball of Adil Auassar, the captain of Sparta, was too light.
Still, the home side took the lead. Ricky van Wolfswinkel scored the 1-0 with his fifteenth goal of the season. Just after the break, Michel Vlap doubled the margin for Twente. After a nice pass from Robin Pröpper, he was able to push in the leather.
The evening seemed to be even more painful for the powerless Sparta, after Vlap also had a good chance to make the third of the evening. However, he failed to close the game and so the final score remained 2-0 in De Grolsch Veste.
