FC Schalke 04 | Schröder puts a stop to daydreams: “Staying in the league would be equated with promotion”

After a year’s break, FC Schalke 04 is back in the Bundesliga. Despite past successes, the miners want to approach their comeback in the top German division with a good deal of humility.

In the past twelve months, Rouven Schröder has become one of the faces of the new FC Schalke. The sports director got the club back on its feet and led it back to the top flight with a clever personnel policy.

It is now important for the 46-year-old to approach the coming season with realistic goals. “If we manage to stay up, it would be equivalent to promotion. Then we would have done a great job,” said Schröder in an interview with “Sport Bild”.

The club is ambitious and wants to win every game, but first it’s about “reestablishing Schalke in the Bundesliga. And we’re working hard on that.”

The Knappen were promoted straight away as the top of the 2nd Bundesliga table, but had to struggle with problems in the meantime. In the back series, coach Dimitrios Grammozis was fired and temporarily replaced by club legend Mike Büskens. It was only under the fan favorite that things really went well for Schalke.

FC Schalke 04: Schröder reveals interest in Harit and Kabak

In order to be able to keep up in the Bundesliga again in the future, FC Schalke need a powerful squad. In the past few days, Schröder has already done a great job and brought in six (!) newcomers. In return, a few professionals should also be given up, including the recently awarded Amine Harit and Ozan Kabak.

Schröder is convinced that he will find suitable buyers for both players. “Amine Harit played excellently in Marseille recently. He not only stabilized his market value, but increased it,” emphasized the former professional.

Kabak also “recently stabilized,” said the head of sport. There is “lively interest” in the defender.

In the meantime, there will be no return to the Knappen squad for the duo. “The fact is that both players are not scheduled for Schalke next season,” Schröder clarified.
