Before the start of the second half of the season against 1. FC Köln, FC Schalke 04 is sad. The results of the first two Bundesliga games of the new year against Eintracht Frankfurt (0:3) and RB Leipzig (1:6) were just too disappointing. Commentator legend Marcel Reif sees some of the blame for the ongoing misery of Knappen coach Thomas Reis.
FC Schalke started the second half of the season with just nine points from 17 matches. The hoped-for upswing after the change of coach in autumn did not materialize, Thomas Reis has so far scored fewer points on average than his unlucky predecessor Frank Kramer (0.5 to 0.6 points per game).
According to TV legend Marcel Reif, the current trainer of the royal blues must make improvements as soon as possible. The 73-year-old said about the debacle against Leipzig in the “Bild” program “Reif ist Live”: “If you can’t do anything about it, he (Thomas Reis, editor’s note) must also be questioned. In terms of performance, he didn’t reach any of his people.”
On Sunday, the bottom of the table in the Bundesliga welcomes 1. FC Köln – anything but a win would hardly help Schalke.
Marcel Reif: FC Schalke 04 has “so little” to offer at the moment
What makes Reif thoughtful is the strangely lethargic mood in Gelsenkirchen. “What this team has to offer is so little that even the Schalke fans are not even angry,” said the former “Sky” reporter.
It was only last summer that the Ruhrpott-Klub managed to return to the German top flight as champions of the 2nd Bundesliga. After a decent start, however, the team lost more and more of the thread.
Five newcomers have already been signed in winter, all on loan. So far, however, there has been no sporting upward trend, and the next descent after 2021 is becoming more and more likely.
